When does my car need a pink slip in NSW?

Most NSW cars need a yearly pink slip once they're over 5 years old. Here's how the timing works, what happens if it fails and how to prepare.

Your rego renewal notice has arrived and it says your car needs a safety inspection. Or perhaps your car has just turned five and you are wondering if this is the year it starts. This guide explains when a NSW pink slip is required, how long it lasts, what happens if the car fails, and how to give it the best chance of passing first time.

The 5-year rule

Transport for NSW says most light vehicles more than 5 years old need a yearly safety inspection report before registration can be renewed. For most cars, the 5 years run from the month and year on the compliance plate. For imported vehicles, they run from the month and year of manufacture (Transport for NSW).

“Light vehicles” covers more than just cars. It includes motorcycles, goods-carrying vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes GVM without power-operated brakes, and trailers and caravans up to 4.5 tonnes ATM. Some small trailers and caravans, seasonally registered vehicles and some conditionally registered vehicles are exempt.

The simplest check is your renewal notice. It tells you whether an inspection is needed this year.

How long is a pink slip valid?

A safety inspection report for a light vehicle is valid for 6 months, and you must renew your registration within that period (Service NSW). That gives you flexibility. You can book the inspection well before the due date, sort out any repairs without pressure, and renew when it suits you, as long as you stay inside the 6 months.

Once your car passes, the inspection station sends the report to Transport for NSW electronically. That is why it is called an eSafety check, and why you normally do not need to take paperwork to Service NSW.

What gets checked

The inspection is carried out by an examiner at an Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) station against Transport for NSW standards. According to the NRMA, the inspection covers:

  • tyre condition and tread depth
  • the general condition of the body
  • lights, indicators, and interior and dashboard lamps
  • the condition of the engine, suspension, exhaust and drivetrain
  • seatbelts
  • engine and drivetrain fluid leaks
  • a brake performance test

It is a safety inspection, not a full mechanical health check. A pass means the car met the safety standard on the day; it does not tell you how long the clutch or timing belt will last.

What happens if your car fails

A failed inspection is not a disaster, but it does mean you cannot renew until the faults are fixed. The examiner will tell you which items failed and why.

Transport for NSW sets out the re-inspection rule (Transport for NSW):

  • Repaired within 14 days and returned to the same AIS station: no extra inspection fee.
  • Repaired after 14 days: another inspection fee applies.

So if your car fails, it pays to act quickly. If you have the repairs done with us, we can re-check the car on site as soon as the work is complete. You can also take the car elsewhere for repairs and return it for the re-check within the 14 days.

How to prepare so it passes first time

Most fails come down to items an owner can spot in a few minutes. Before your booking:

  1. Walk around the lights. Headlights (high and low beam), tail lights, brake lights, indicators, number plate light and reverse lights. Ask someone to stand behind the car while you press the brake.
  2. Check the tyres. Look for worn tread, bulges, cuts and uneven wear, including the inside edges. Uneven wear can point to a suspension or alignment problem.
  3. Look at the windscreen and wipers. Large chips or cracks in the driver’s line of sight, and torn wiper blades, are worth sorting before the inspection.
  4. Test the seatbelts. Every belt should latch, release and retract properly, with no fraying.
  5. Listen to the brakes. Grinding, squealing, a soft pedal or the car pulling to one side should be checked before the inspection, not during it.
  6. Look under the car. Fresh oil, coolant or transmission fluid spots on the driveway are a warning sign.
  7. Note warning lights. If a warning light is on, mention it when you book.
  8. Listen for exhaust noise. A blowing or rattling exhaust often means a leak or broken mount.

If your car is due for a service anyway, booking a service and a pink slip together means wear items like brake pads and globes are looked at before the inspection. Brake or suspension issues can be handled by our brakes and suspension service, and warning lights by our engine diagnostics service.

Mobile pink slips

Transport for NSW notes that mobile safety check providers can inspect a car at your home; the inspection fee is the same but a call-out fee may apply (Transport for NSW). A workshop inspection has one practical advantage: if something fails, repairs and the re-check can be done in the same place.

Frequently asked questions

Does my car need a pink slip every year?

Once most light vehicles are more than 5 years old, a safety inspection is needed every year to renew registration. Your renewal notice confirms whether one is required.

How early can I get a pink slip?

The report is valid for 6 months, so you can have the inspection done up to 6 months before you renew. Renew within that period or you’ll need a new inspection.

What if my car fails?

Have the faults repaired. If you return to the same inspection station within 14 days, no extra inspection fee applies. After 14 days, another inspection fee applies.

Do I need to take the pink slip to Service NSW?

Usually not. When the car passes, the station sends the report to Transport for NSW electronically, and you can renew online.
