A noisy exhaust or oil spots on the driveway are easy to put off, but both can get worse and both can cause a pink slip failure. Andrew’s Mechanical handles exhaust repairs for Blacktown and surrounding suburbs, including full exhaust replacements, and tracks down engine oil leaks, at our workshop at 3 Goulburn St, Kings Park, a short walk from Marayong station.

What’s included

  • Exhaust repairs – leaking joints, gaskets, cracked pipes and broken hangers.
  • Exhaust replacements – replacing rusted or damaged sections or the full system.
  • Engine oil leak diagnosis – finding where the oil is coming from, then repairing the gasket or seal at fault.

Signs of an exhaust problem

  • The exhaust is suddenly louder, or sounds like it’s blowing or popping.
  • A ticking noise from the engine bay when cold that quietens as it warms up – often an exhaust manifold leak.
  • A rattle from under the car, especially at idle or over bumps.
  • The exhaust hangs low or scrapes on driveways.
  • Exhaust fumes in the cabin. Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide. If you can smell fumes inside the car, drive with the windows open and get it checked straight away.
  • The check engine light is on – an exhaust leak can upset the oxygen sensor readings.

Signs of an oil leak

  • Dark brown or black spots where you park.
  • A burning oil smell after a drive, or light smoke from under the bonnet when you stop.
  • Having to top up oil between services.
  • Oily grime building up on the engine or underneath the car.

Common sources include the rocker (valve) cover gasket, the sump gasket and drain plug, the oil filter, and the front or rear crankshaft seals. Oil can also run a long way before it drips, so the spot on the ground isn’t always under the leak. Finding the true source first means you only pay to fix what is actually leaking.

Not every spot is engine oil. Coolant is often green, pink or orange and smells sweet, and red fluid can be from an automatic transmission or power steering. If you’re not sure, bring the car in.

Frequently asked questions

Can an exhaust leak fail a pink slip?

Yes. Exhaust leaks, loose or missing parts and excessive noise can be failure items on a NSW safety check.

Is it safe to drive with an exhaust leak?

A small leak at the back of the system is mostly a noise problem, but any leak can let fumes into the cabin. If you can smell exhaust inside the car, keep the windows open and have it checked straight away.

How do you find where an oil leak is coming from?

We clean and inspect the engine and underside to trace the oil back to its source, rather than replacing parts based on where the drip lands.

Is a small oil leak a problem?

It can be. Oil dripping onto a hot exhaust can smoke or catch fire, a leak can lower the oil level enough to damage the engine, and leaks can be a pink slip issue. Get it checked before it gets worse.
