Pink slip, blue slip or nothing at all?

Answer two questions to see which NSW inspection your car, ute or 4WD needs before you renew. Your rego renewal notice is the final word.

01 What's the vehicle's registration status?
02 Compliance plate date (or build date for imports)
— Choose an option above

Based on Transport for NSW rules for light vehicles. Some caravans, trailers, historic and conditionally registered vehicles are exempt or follow different rules. Read the official guidance.

What’s included

  • Pink slips – NSW rego safety inspections for light vehicles, with the result sent electronically to Transport for NSW.
  • Blue slips – AUVIS inspection reports for vehicles that need to be registered or re-registered.
  • Vehicle safety checks before sale or transfer – so you know where the car stands before it changes hands.
  • Repairs to failed items – as a licensed repairer, we can fix most items that fail, such as brakes, suspension and steering, lights or exhaust leaks.

Pink slips

The age is counted from the month and year on the compliance plate, and your renewal notice tells you whether an inspection is needed. Because a pink slip is valid for 6 months, you can get it done ahead of your due date. If the car fails, the items have to be fixed before you can renew. If the repairs are done within 14 days and the car comes back to the same station to be re-checked, no extra inspection fee applies. Read more in When does my car need a pink slip?

Blue slips

A blue slip is needed when the vehicle isn’t simply renewing. The AUVIS report is valid for 42 days from the inspection, so plan to register soon after. See Do I need a blue slip after my rego has expired? and our guide to pink slip vs blue slip in NSW.

Common reasons cars fail

  • Tyres worn to the tread wear indicators, or with cuts and bulges in the sidewall.
  • Brake pads or rotors worn past their limit, or a brake warning light on.
  • Worn suspension or steering parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends or leaking shock absorbers.
  • Blown globes in headlights, brake lights, indicators or the number plate light.
  • Cracks or chips in the driver’s view of the windscreen, or wipers that smear.
  • Frayed or faulty seatbelts.
  • Rust in structural areas, or exhaust leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Does my car need a pink slip to renew rego?

Most light vehicles more than 5 years old from their compliance plate date need one. Your renewal notice will say.

How long is a pink slip valid?

A NSW pink slip is valid for 6 months, so you can have it done before your rego is due.

What happens if my car fails?

The failed items need to be repaired before you can renew. If the repairs are finished within 14 days and the car is re-checked at the same inspection station, no extra inspection fee applies. We can do most of those repairs here.

My rego expired two months ago. Do I need a blue slip?

Usually not. A blue slip is needed once the rego has been expired for more than 3 months. If it has lapsed for less than that, you can normally renew with a pink slip if your car needs one. Call us if you’re unsure.
