Western Sydney summers are hard work in a car with weak aircon. Andrew’s Mechanical handles car aircon regas for Blacktown and surrounding suburbs, along with leak repairs, compressor and condenser replacement and cabin filters, from our workshop at 3 Goulburn St, Kings Park, a short walk from Marayong station.

What’s included

  • Regas – recovering the old refrigerant and recharging the system to the amount your car is specified to hold.
  • Air conditioning repairs – finding and fixing leaks and faults in the system.
  • Compressor replacement – when the compressor or its clutch has failed.
  • Condenser replacement – the radiator-like part at the front of the car that is exposed to stone damage and corrosion.
  • Cabin filter replacement – for better airflow and fewer smells and dust in the cabin.

Signs your aircon needs attention

  • It blows cool but not cold, or only gets cold at highway speed.
  • It starts cold and then turns warm after a while.
  • Weak airflow from the vents even on the highest fan setting – often a blocked cabin filter.
  • A musty or damp smell when you first turn it on.
  • A new rattle, squeal or grinding noise when the aircon is switched on, which can point to the compressor.
  • The windows are slow to demist – the aircon helps dry the air.

We explain the common causes in Why is my car air conditioning not cold?

Why a regas alone isn’t always the answer

A car’s aircon is a sealed system. If it is low on gas, it has usually leaked out somewhere. A regas will bring the cooling back, but if the leak isn’t found and fixed it will run low again. Running a system low on gas can also be hard on the compressor. That’s why we look at why the gas is low, not just top it up.

Cars use different refrigerants. Many older cars use R134a, while many newer cars use R1234yf. The type is usually on a sticker under the bonnet. Ask us when you book whether we can service your car’s system.

Why book with us

  • We are a licensed NSW motor vehicle repairer, licence MVRL47744.
  • We work on all makes, including European cars, 4WDs and diesels.
  • We can look at the cooling system and radiator at the same time, since the aircon condenser and radiator sit together at the front of the car.
  • We’re also an Authorised Inspection Station and carry out AUVIS (blue slip) inspections.
  • We’re a local Kings Park workshop near Marayong station, handy for Quakers Hill, Marayong and Blacktown.
  • Call the workshop during opening hours to book.

If the aircon fan or controls aren’t working at all, the fault may be electrical – see our auto electrical page.

Frequently asked questions

How often does car aircon need a regas?

A healthy system shouldn’t need regular regassing, because the refrigerant isn’t used up. If it keeps losing cooling, there is usually a leak that needs to be found and fixed.

Why does my aircon smell musty?

Moisture and debris build up in the system and the cabin filter over time. Replacing the cabin filter often helps. If the smell remains, ask us to look at it when you book.

Which refrigerant does my car use?

Many older cars use R134a and many newer cars use R1234yf. Check the sticker under the bonnet, or tell us the make, model and year when you call.

How often should the cabin filter be changed?

Follow the interval in your logbook. If you drive on dusty roads or notice weak airflow or smells, it may need changing sooner.
